501st 621st Detention Squad

The 621st Detention Squad is dedicated to having fun while bringing Star Wars costuming through charity and community service for the state of South Dakota and is part of the Central Garrison, which combined with 75 other Garrisons from around the world, make up the 501st Legion, an all-volunteer international Star Wars Costuming Club.
The Legion was started in 1997 by Albin Johnson from South Carolina, and since then has grown to over 14,412 active members with a total of 31,646 Legion approved costumes covering 6 different continents.

While the 501st was initially founded to unite costumers with a penchant for Star Wars villainy, one of the real-world missions is to bring good to local communities through volunteer charity work. The 501st is always looking for opportunities to brighten the lives of the less fortunate and to bring awareness to positive causes on both a local and global scale. One such example started in September 2016, when the 501st Legion announced their commitment to a first- of-its kind international endowment in a unique partnership with Make-A-Wish. The 501st Legion Make-A-Wish Endowment Fund will allow Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International to grant more Star Wars-related wishes to children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. The endowment fund will allow Make-A-Wish to grant wishes, alternating between the United States and international locations every other year – a first for an endowment of this kind.

The Endowment relies on contributions from its members, as well as the public. With a goal of $150,000 in the fund by the end of 2021, the Endowment fund will grant wishes from the interest accrued; as the fund continues to grow, so will the number of wishes granted by the endowment.
